Witchlight by Jessi Zabarsky is a comic published by Czap Books in 2016, and will be re-published by Random House Graphic in April 2020 (this time in color): ISBN 978-0593119990
It is a beautiful comic about insecurity and strength, about caring and magic. The storytelling takes you by the hand and softly leads you right into the hearts of the heroines, vulnerable and determined. The art seems simple which makes it appear effortless, yet it creates a world of details and nuance. Zabarsky knows how and when to use words, and makes them count. It is a poetic road movie, a bildungsroman in a fantasy world devoid of tired tropes. Witchlight strikes a great balance between a straightforward plot and the mysteries of will and feeling. It touched me, warmed me, and keeps resonating.
